    Speaker's note: Aged 54 from Hull, Yorkshire, England. At 16 apprenticed to be a house painter but did not like it, so left to go to sea. After four years in diificult conditions became skipper of a boat aged 27. At 27 married to a woman from Linconshire. Had six children (two boys and four girls). His family live in Boston, at time of writing his eldest boy was 16, and he had never seen the youngest. Describes an incident when he had to abandon his boat. Document named 'About my Life' included with minor details about diet etc. Has been a soldier for 5 years. Has always lived in Hull. Educated at a public school in Hull. Both parents from Hull. Can read and write in English. Religion: protestant. Occupation: fisherman. Item note: John reads the Parable of the Prodigal Son (taken from Luke chapter XV, verse 11-32).
