  • Abstract

Part 1 of 2. [00:00:00 - 00:04:34]. This is a recording made by Iona Opie of an original recording created and sent to her by a schoolgirl from Ayr, Ayrshire in May, 1975. Throughout the recording, the schoolgirl sings a continuous stream of singing games. She performs: 'Came a Duke a'Riding' [00:00:14 - 00:00:50]; 'On a Mountain Stands a Lady' [00:00:51 - 00:01:00]; 'All the Boys in London Town' [000:01:02 - 00:01:22] and 'The Big Ship Sails' [00:02:29 - 00:03:00].  Two short rhymes are recited by the girl. These are: 'Build a Bonfire' [00:02:00 - 00:02:10] and 'The Bell, The Bell' [00:02:11 - 00:02:21]. Two songs, often used as clapping game songs, are also performed. The schoolgirl sings: 'My Mother Told Me' [00:01:23 - 00:01:57] and 'A Sailor Went to Sea, Sea, Sea' [00:03:31 - 00:04:15]. The recording finishes with the schoolgirl explaining that she hopes 'some of these things will help you [Iona Opie] with your book'.
