Part 1: Description of Jane Drew [JD] and Maxwell Fry finding house at Cotherstone. Description of JD's childhood home and experiences at Thornton Heath; her parents' social position and values; early schooling friendship with Peggy Ashcroft (pact never to adopt men's names); JD's parents' health and financial circumstances; her relationship with her mother. JD as linguist, her knowledge of Hindustani and Farsi. JD's secondary education (Croydon High School); decision to become an architect; interest in art galleries and museums (later as trustee of Victoria and Albert Museum); admiration for John Pope-Hennessy. Character and interests of JD's parents, importance of music in household; JD's training at the AA (Architectural Association): choice of AA, financial self-support through teaching, position of women at AA, relations with men, importance of self-education.
