Part 17. Abstract/figurative debate. Abstract Expressionist exhibition at Tate, Whitechapel - impact on Anthony Fry [AF]. Gained Harkness Fellowship and went to USA, 1961/2. Scale of US paintings, their physicality. Rothko, Motherwell, Frankenthaler, Sam Francis, Morris Louis. Pollock. Impact of American shows on students. Corsham. William Scott [WS]. AF’s first exhibition (St George’s Gallery) due to WS. AF worked at home. Had flat in Bath during first year. Outdoor landscapes. AF and exhibitions. Re-confronted with early dancing figure painting bought by John Sainsbury , links with present work, details. AF’s paintings ‘ a veritable battlefield of changes and evolving images’. Now works more fluently, is more confident. Recent paintings are stronger. Looks back at dancing series, details. Landscapes AF did in Bath concurrent with figure pictures. Figure paintings in first exhibition. John Berger. Influenced by Martin Froy to move onto larger scale. Scale of work related to houses/flats AF has lived in. No great body of work from Rome years.
