Abstract
Part 9 (tape 5 side A): 1977 HP and his family moved to the USA and he set up the firm's office there. He and John Greaves had made a number of forays before that looking at the prospects for a New York office. Opened office in September 1977 - one other lawyer who had been working on secondment with New York firm. HP's family - except one son already at Winchester where he stayed - had moved in August that year. Family reactions to the move. Freshfields one of the first UK firms there - Linklaters (Mark Sheldon) already there. Lovell, White and King and Herbert Smith followed soon after. Few foreign lawyers in New York then. Lived in Larchmont, nice house the firm financed. Life and practice in New York. Stayed on an extra year, making 4 years in all - very good personal and professional life. Acquiring clients - marketing and PR activity. The process of building up the practice in New York. Freshfields' other overseas offices and the practice of foreign law.
