Abstract
Talks about birth and childhood in Ukraine; orthodox Jewish family; part of cohesive provincial Jewish community. Religious and secular schools; describes typical day. No anti-Semitism until Hungarians took control. Teachers' influence on pupils. Memories of German occupation, 1940. Deportation of Jews. He saw the executions of his mother and sisters by sonderkommando. Escape; long story of escape/imprisonment in German camps, 1941-1945. After liberation, prolonged attempt to return home. Hospitalisation, failure to find home, culminating in desire to start a new life in England. Arrival in England; successful integration with support from the local Jewish community in Brighton; marriage; becoming part of a new community; bringing up a family; explaining the Holocaust experiences to his children. Reconciliation with the past. Reflections on lessons learned.
