Abstract
Part 1: Born 1931 in Hajdúdorog, Hungary. Daughter of physician who moved to Hajdúdorog from Budapest. Family orthodox and very observant. Both grandfathers rabbis. Family language Hungarian. Account of relationships with non-Jewish neighbours. Memories of incidents of anti-Semitism. Recollection of envy on the part of non-Jewish villagers. Description of family house. Description of roles of parents and male and female children. Memories of extended family. Description of elementary and secondary schools. Secondary school in 1942, account of pro-German attitudes and remarks by teachers. Description of learning to read Hebrew and of celebration of festivals. Account of father’s wish to emigrate to Palestine. Account of childhood games and favourite books. Account of period immediately before German occupation. Memory of men being conscripted and sent to Russia. Account of parents listening in secret to the BBC and EA acting as a lookout.
