'Top tongues' and harmonic series. Aiming for sound between Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders. Working as duo with John Stevens and SME [Spontaneous Music Ensemble]. Trevor Watts, analytical foil to Stevens vision. Old Place [Ronnie Scott's] gigs. Parker a hard-line improviser, not interested in tunes and composed material, therefore conflict with Trevor Watts and repertoire approach to SME. Watts left between sets to form Amalgam. Duo (1966/7) similar to Coltrane with Rashied Ali but independent. Interviewer remembers gig opposite NYJO in Birmingham. Music as conversation, John counted in but no tempo. Remains the same if John uses small kit, hermetic and non-referential. Micro-structures also adopted by Derek Bailey, Tony Oxley, Gavin Bryars [Joseph Holbrooke Trio], Parker heard them live at Little Theatre Club (1964/5), interactive in the manner of Bill Evans Trio, influential on Stevens/Parker as well. 'Karyobin' - Steve Winwood / Spencer Davis had Chris Blackwell's ear and encouraged Island and Eddie Krahmer (Hendrix producer) to record SME, enlarged to include Derek Bailey, Dave Holland and Kenny Wheeler.
