The four-stroke rhythm that is heard in the beginning is found throughout North Africa and can be noted in particular in Moroccan Gnawa, Algerian diwan, and Tunisian stambeli music, which being a music developed by displaced sub-saharan africans in North Africa, drew of course from sub-Saharan musical aesthetics. Hausa aesthetics in this sense can be traced in north africa in fascinating ways. The instrumental make-up of this recording is also quite similar to certain styles in North Africa. Of course, the Haussa influence was most influential in Tunisia and Algeria (the latter is my area of fieldwork). I'm personally in question about calling this "arab" style and would like to know more about why that was noted. I would love to discuss further. I can be reached at
