Recordings in this collection can be played by anyone.
These recordings were digitised as part of the Endangered Archives Programme (EAP) project EAP115: Collection and digitisation of music in Micronesian society. They feature a wide variety of musical styles and chart the evolution of music in the region, with recordings ranging from religious chants and choirs, to modern rock and reggae songs.
The project digitised recordings collected from government radio stations in Majuro, Marshall Islands; Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap, Federated States of Micronesia; and Koror, Palau. Recordings were also digitised from two church sources in Chuuk, the Liebenzel Mission and the Catholic Church media studio, as well as songs and chants from Mokil in Pohnpei State, and songs dating from the 1950s, from the private collection of a resident of Majuro.
The entire collection of digitised music is housed with the archival partner, Micronesian Seminar (MicSem) in Pohnpei. Micronesian Seminar is a Jesuit-sponsored public education program for the island nations of the north Pacific. Its library includes historic photos and music beside print materials.
