  • Description

Item notes: The two men take turns in singing the solo calls, while the other maintains an ostenato accompaniment - e.g. 'hellele' or 'wooo'; the tunes appear to be fairly standard for each type of song, while the words vary; in these types of songs, recognition appears to be given to the singers with the greatest repertoire of lines and with the greatest ability to add variations or witty, topical extemporisations. Performer notes: Xasan is the uncle of Xuseen, used to herd together, now farm and keep some cattle in Sablaale; they are from Guriceel and Matabaan districts, Hiran or Galguduud region. Recording notes: Songs were recorded for John Low, indoors with no other herders or livestock around - i.e. under studio conditions which tend to inhibit the singers. Recordist's notes: in John Low's notes, this is no. 28 of Tape 1, Side 2 [Somalia tapes]
