  • Description

Item note: This was Cooke's first return visit to Uganda since 1968. Many of the informants were old friends who had survived 19 years of political turmoil and war. Conditions in southern Uganda were bad - the infrastructure of the country was in ruins and manufactured goods were in desperately short supply. Northern Uganda was still at war with the new President of Uganda, Museveni; The 1987 visit was made possible through the generosity of the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland and the Travel and Research Committee of the University of Edinburgh. Performance note: Item announced by Byekwaso Maganda. Begins in Soga rhythm but drums make it sound somewhat baakisimba in style. Includes 4 drums, rattles, kazoos solo and chorus. Drums play strongly after a while, then some ululation and cries of thanks just before the end. Adolu (our Itesot companion from the Ministry of Culture) suggests the drumming is in fact an imitation of kiganda baakisimba style. Performer's note: Maganda's musicians. Byekwaso Maganda is a traditional healer of great repute from Bunhyiro. Recording note: Recorded in Byekwaso Maganda's dancing and healing arena under a straw thatched roof with open walls. Recordist's note: In Peter Cooke's notes, this is PCUG87.24.1.
