  • Description

Alec Stewart, blind story teller, piper and singer. Bettyhill, Sutherland, Scotland. Posed outdoors in association with a private [possibly a BBC] recording session. Rear of photograph states "Alec Stewart. Blind storyteller, piper and singer (recorded by Hamish Henderson and Peter Kennedy) at Bettyhill, Sutherland, June 1955. Alec told a large number of Ossianic stories in Gaelic then translated them into English. Length of some stories was more than 20 mins. They have been in oral tradition since before the birth of Christianity. They are now told by tinkers such as this one who lives at Lairg in the winter and during the summer travels Caithness and Sutherland with family, tent, animals, horses and cart." 8 of 13 related photographs from same location.
